3 from Kinetocast

Kinetocast – To Watch While Smelling Summer (2007, 8.2MB, 1:30)

Kinetocast – To Watch With Any Spectacle (2007, 8MB, 1:21)

Kinetocast – To Watch Feeling Betrayed (2006, 2.7MB, 0:35)

Three from the wildly amusing, all too infrequently updated kinetocast.
All based on the idea that these short videos can be watched as they
are labeled appropriate to time or event, this entire videoblog is fairly
genius conceptual work. Also worth checking out from Mack McFarland,
The Portland That Was….

More of these to come…

Daniel Swan – Interlords II

sun
Interlords II (2008, 70MB, 5:09 min.)

Deft & compelling bit of After Effects powered You Tube
mashing from Daniel Swan, frighteningly, still a
student at Camberwell.
One to watch.

Western Spaghetti

PES – Western Spaghetti (2008, 18.3MB, 1:41)

New innovative work from PES.

Rupert Howe – Sun

sun
Sun (2008, 5.4MB, 30 secs)

Utterly ravishing Lumière from the never predictable,
always interesting, Rupert Howe.

On that summery note, we’re going to take a rest in the sunshine.
We love doing DVblog, but the daily deadline definitely takes
its toll after a bit.
We’ll be getting ready to hit the ground running again around 16th Sept.
& we’ll still keeping our eyes peeled for the new, for the weird &
(best of all!) for the wonderful.

Have a great summer!

Ping Pong
1st Ping-Pong Lesson With Lucha Lib (2008, 31.2MB, 4:18 min)

Even 18 years after the wall came down there’s still a quite palpable
residue of the great absurdist tradition that flourished under Stalinism in work
being made in the former Eastern bloc.
(Of course it goes back further, to

Three more from Paul Kelly

Dust/Spring Evening

dignity
Dignity (2004, 40.4MB, 7:02 min)

Rain : Focus
Rain : Focus winter in the north (2004-9, 9.5MB, 1:12 min)

We showed a couple of rather restrained, pastoral pieces by Paul Kelly
in February of this year.
So, here’re three rather restrained, somewhat more urban pieces.
I admire the determinedly austere approach, to make much – or rather
to make us make much- of what is given to the camera (quite a lot, it has
to be said, in Dignity which is a touching portrait of man & dog), although
one does have visions of a kind of Yoda figure meditating in depth before every possible
editing decision to take the four years Focus apparently took to make.
I look forward to more.

Jillian Mcdonald – Screen Kiss

Screen Kiss
Screen Kiss (clip) (2005, 3.1MB, 1:00 min.)

Jillian is trying to make Billy Bob Thornton jealous, inserting
herself into existing film clips and getting kisses from Daniel Day Lewis,
Vincent Gallo, Johnny Depp, and Billy Bob

Sam Renseiw again

birthday
patafilm #609 (2008, 18.2MB, 4:27 min)

No excuse offered or needed to show work by the Danish
magician, Sam Renseiw. (When I called him the ‘genius Dane’
here a little while ago, he wrote me, modestly demurring,
but he is, Dear Reader, he is. Both.)
He says “…still imbricated in the subtle magic of simple things
and situations…”, which is unusually accurate for an artist
self assessment.
Beautiful work.

Toaster

Morgan Schwartz – Toaster (2001, 7.3MB, 3:30)

From Morgan Schwartz.

Psycho Bob – Bob And The Neighbors

Bob And The Neighbors (2008, 10 MB, 1:10 min.)

his yard, his nosy neighbor crosses the line, forcing Bob to take
matters into his own hands.”

From The AV Club.

Get Out and Pay

Get Out and Play
Get Out and Play (2008, 36.9MB, 1:25 min)

Somebody called Donna sends us a mail ‘writing from a Nokia sponsored blog’.
Donna, kind soul that she is, thought
‘With your stop motion background we thought you might have a
different take on the video than the gamers and
tech bloggers who might normally watch the video’

Aw..bless her!
Nothing to do, then, with trying to use as us a part of an attempted
“virality” strategy ( don’t get us wrong, we’re impressed dvblog even
appears on these folks’ radar)
So..watch the movie..it’s good.
There’s stuff to be learned here, no doubt –
not least that the corporate vultures can clearly buy in time and talent;
but how much better a world it would be if the silly amounts of cash it
clearly cost to make this just went straight to fund new work by artists…

Three from Fred Muram

Fred Muram – Brownout (2006, 1.4MB, 0:38)

Fred Muram – Three Hands Feeding Me Garbage (2005, 804KB, 0:21)

Fred Muram – Still Scared of Needles (2008, 1MB, 0:27)

Three very short, very endearing works from Fred Muram,
commentary on culture and mass media, consumption, and
physical appearance.

A lot can be said in under 40 seconds.

Backstreet Boys by The Dormitory Boys – I want it that way

backstreetboys

Keep On Smoking

Michel de Broin – Keep On Smoking (2006, 8.2MB, 2:51)

Absolutely hilarious video for a fantastic piece of interactive art.
I thought I was going to end up with a statement about
smoking cigarettes with I came across Michel de Broin’s
Keep On Smoking.
But completely unrelated, de Broin says this:

As an alternative to petrol, this custom-made bicycle
transforms kinetic energy produced by the cyclist into smoke.
The will to power is a renewable energy resource that can be
recuperated by a power generator supplying enough electricity
to operate a smoke machine. The work is the result of two
coupled machines; the one human is productive and the other
machine, consumptive. This coupling of machines produces smoke,
a waste energy that is liberated freely in the atmosphere.

Papa and Daddy

Papa and Daddy – Jump Start (2008, 9.8MB, 0:53)

Papa and Daddy (Shawn Preston and Ross Ludwig)
made this terrific 2008 Superbowl commercial,
a fun coincidence since I found their charming ad
work via Food Chain Films, a nice page of several
directors based in Portland.

Lewis LaCook -Joey

Joey
Joey (2008, 18.9MB, 1:08 min)

A new video from Lewis LaCook comes too infrequently.
He’s one of a kind in his and here too.
There’s a throwing of everything, including the
kitchen sink, going in his movies & it shouldn’t work
but it so does.
We’ll repost another of his pieces tomorrow; a little feast for you.
Just for the record here’s Lewis’s description of the piece:

Joey, or DJ Joey, as he is affectionately called, is a
young man in Lorain, Ohio, who spends most of his day
dancing on the corner of 28th Street and Elyria Avenue
to his boombox, waving and smiling at passing
traffic.

This video was constructed of footage found on
YouTube, all dealing with Lorain, Ohio. This is the
first video I

My View

Phil Hamilton – My View (2007, 12.6MB, 1:00)

Phil Hamilton doesn’t post video very often.
When he does, it’s just freaking cool.
Phil is now a freshman at the same school where
I’m currently finishing my graduate degree, but
I’ve never see him in real life.
This is a video of his dorm room view.
The music is also original, by him.
His work – all of it – always makes me wish
I was younger, and that is a real compliment.

GARhodes – Mirror

Geoffrey Alan Rhodes – Mirror (2006, 22.2MB, 6:09)

Holy sh*t this is amazing.
Geoffrey Alan Rhodes, aka GARhodes, is an
insanely talented artist across mediums.
The impossible mirror shot only becomes more
impressive as this piece progresses, and I sure do
love reflexive performance art done right.
Wow.

Sensual Seduction

Snoop Dogg – Sensual Seduction (2007, 35.3MB, 4:08)

So Snoop Dogg is a misogynist and exploits
his own Black culture regularly.
I get it, and I preach it: the guy is nasty.
But if this isn’t an amazing music video,
I don’t know what is.
This song is called Sexual Eruption, but for
obvious reasons, the edited “clean” version
is the one being passed around.
It’s been out for several months, and I’ve been
debating whether or not to post it.
But since our mission is to post what thrills and
excites us, here it is.
I hope it does something similar for you.

Up in Smoke

Still Project 07 (2007, 5.7MB, 1:29 min)

Half of the splendid & indispensable MTAA, whose work we feature here
whenever possible – conceptualist pranksters with a rare (for the territory)
& self deprecating human warmth – Mark River makes interesting video stuff
(amongst other things) on his Tinjail site.
A lot of them are kind of multi-channel (go look) & don’t fit the dvblog format.
This one does & is excellent too..
Here’s his preamble to it:

‘The wild blue yonder, the decent, la jetee, fearless, street fight,
loud QUIET loud, a sound of thunder, enemy at the gate, so wrong they

Quiet City

Quiet City (2007, 11.2MB, 1:52)

Stunning, reflective trailer for Quiet City,
a movie by Aaron Katz, available from Benten Films.
These are my favorite kinds of films.
I love living in – being in – cities, but I prefer them
when they are their most silent and empty.
Text loosely taken from the Apple trailer site, edited by me:
Together, Samantha and Charlie, two somewhat aimless youths,
share twenty-four hours drifting from late night diners, to city parks,
to abandoned apartments, to a party and art gallery deep in the heart
of industrial Brooklyn. Delicately realized with generous humanity,
Quiet City offers hope for intimate connection in a world that grows
larger by the day.

Brian Gibson – A

Brian Gibson – A (2007, 11.1MB, 0:25)

DVblog’s own Brian Gibson made this, and I love it.
Maybe I just suck with lights and filters and editing,
but I don’t know how he does this.
Really charming.

What is Joppa?

What Does Joppa Mean? (2007, 41.7MB, 3:34)

Where the hell am I going to get $10,000,000? (2007, 22.7MB, 1:57)

I’m not usually a fan of Internet video series,
but I LOVE Joppa.
Here are the first two episodes of the series,
including the infectious intro that first got me hooked.
I think the first season is the best, still sort of raw.
Produced by four adorable guys who live on the
northern Massachusetts coast, Joppa asks important
questions like “How much is that in hands?”, “Is jive
a language?”, and “Isn’t the Lupus like a giant rabbit?”
I rarely laugh so hard.

Sleighride (2006, 63MB, 4:30 min)

church
the church of the future (2006, 28.5MB, 2:39 min)

There’s a rather un-PC expression current in estuary English:
mental. Its semantic nuances don’t lend themselves to easy explanation.
It implies a kamikaze degree of chutzpah, often in a physical
context but also by metaphorical extension to any field of
behaviour & often expressing a kind of stunned admiration.
Well, watch the vids & deny if you can that John Michael Boling
+ Javier Alberto Morales ( collaborators on the visuals, JAM does the music on
sleighride) and owners of
www.gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooogle.com
are totally fucking mental

I Found Love

Grow Design Work – I Found Love (2006, 8.8MB, 1:35)

So precious. A “music video” made for Nick Jr. show
Yo Gabba Gabba, from Bran Dougherty-Johnson,
who is Grow Design Work. Originally a Free Design
song, covered here by the Trembling Blue Stars.
This makes me so happy.

Steven Ball – Snow Factory

snowfactory1
Snow Factory (2006, 6.41MB, 53 secs)

Lyrical whimsy, which sounds lightweight, but isn’t.
It’s beautifully made by Steven Ball and has a strange
gravity not unreminiscent of the less dread-saturated
(I hesitate to say “more playful”) end of Kafka…or
Ben Marcus, perhaps…
