Inflatables in Public Space

JooYoun Paek – Self-Sustainable Chair (2007, 4.2MB, 1:37)

Joo Youn Paek demonstrates how to use her
self-sustaining chair on a walk down the street.
This and several related excellent related projects
originate in the NYU ITP program.

Real DMB TU – Life Dress (2007, 5.2MB, 0:33)

From Anna Maria Cornelia (also known by pseudonym
Ann De Gersem), a Life Dress which allows a person
to create instant personal boundaries in public.
As a woman often bothered by unwanted attention
in public – not to mention a lover of profound design
– I am so pleased by this concept, even if the end
result might be even more unsolicited scrutiny.
The dress is featured here in a commercial for
South Korea’s mobile broadcast service, TU Media.

Peace Not War – Glass Bead Collective

Peace Not War
Peace not War(2007, 33.8MB, 1:06 min.)

Will this action/piece by the Glass Bead Collective hasten the
end of any war? Dunno – nice to think so, but I’m sceptical.
What it certainly does, though, is to add considerably to the
store of human wonder.
When we stop our lords & masters spending money on invasions,
& we’ve fed & housed everyone, then we should definitely
spend some of what’s left on high-powered projectors.

László Moholy-Nagy

Lichtspiel Schwarz, Weiss, Grau (clip) (1932, 12MB, 1:39 min.)

“Lichtspiel Schwarz, Weiss, Grau”, a doc concerning Moholy-Nagy’s kinetic sculpture,
the Light Space-Modulator. Moholy-Nagy believed the motion picture played a significant
role as both art & investigative tool.
‘Painting, photography, and film are parts of one problem although their techniques
may be entirely different. They belong to the same realm; that is, to visual expression,
where cross-fertilizations are possible.’

Christ! -if it’s not nailed down he’ll remix it.
jimpunk does the biz on dvblog.
The whole glorious sequence here.
We’re not worthy… we’re not worthy…

Antinormalizer

Antinormalizer
Antinormalizer (2007, 83.9MB, 9:58 min)

This has quite a complex history, which is explained
better in the video than I could do here.
My nose twitched when I saw it posted on the
Rhizome list by Brett Stalbaum.
Anything associated with him is worth checking out
as witness the various excellent things he’s made with
a hiking theme ( & hiking theme so fails to do justice to the peculiarity
& wonder of them).
Anyway this one is a big team thing, students and staff from
two courses at Unviersity of California San Diego &
it’s entertaining & thought provoking & it feels like
a 2007, modern tech twist on 1968’s
‘Sous les pavés, la plage!’.

On Screen Chemistry

Protein
Protein (2006, 0.9MB, 22 sec)

‘This is a cartoon representation of the process
used to link amino acids to make a protein.’

Flavoprotein
Flavoprotein (2006, 1.3MB, 4 sec loop)

‘This is a model of one of the proteins used
in the electron transport chain. Basically, where
we get most of our energy to survive as living organisms.’

bilayer
Bilayer (2006, 3.3MB, 3 sec loop)

‘This is the general structure of our cell membranes.’

Beautiful animations -teaching materials- of chemical
processes & structures by Professor James K. Hardy
of the University of Akron. Thanks to Professor Hardy for
the accompanying explanations of what each animation
actually represents.
The whole series is a delight.

Interactive design

Intimate Controllers
Intimate Controllers Game Console (2007, 3.5MB, 2:40)

An interpersonal videogame in progress from JennyLC Chowdhurdy,
a woman responsible for such projects as an emphysema-ridden
My Little Pony and a portable telephone booth so you can finally
have some privacy on your cellular in public.

Muttering Hat
Muttering Hat (2007, 7.5MB, 1:12)

Also, a Muttering Hat from Kate Hartman, who believes
plants should be able to call humans on the telephone
and makes gloves that dance.
I wish I got to spend all day making this kind of innovation.

Eclectic – Ross Ching

Eclectic (2007, 66MB, 2:26 min.)

“This film I created by myself. It is a series of time-lapse shots that I edited
together and put to music. Rather than using a regular video camera,
I opted to use a digital SLR camera because it allowed me to shoot in ultra
high definition as well as get the depth of field only available to film cameras”.

Curt Cloninger – cannonball

cannonball
cannonball (1996, 32.6MB, 3:35 min.)

Hi all,
This was recorded at the Blockbuster Video grand opening in Daphne,
Alabama, US, on December 6, 1996. They had a video karaoke machine
with a bluescreen, and you could choose your song and they would tape
you and give you a copy of the videotape. I think I might have also
had the option to select “Sci-fi” background or something like that.
The whole process took about five minutes and this was the result.

Some close friends refer to this as the highlight of my artistic
career, and sometimes I am inclined to agree with them.
Enjoy,
Curt.
