Newlyn Art Gallery by Cornish based artist Nigel Ayers.
The zodiacal stuff leaves me a bit cold but the sound is utterly wonderful,
and the simple yet elegant & effective presentation is great too.

Hi all,
This was recorded at the Blockbuster Video grand opening in Daphne,
Alabama, US, on December 6, 1996. They had a video karaoke machine
with a bluescreen, and you could choose your song and they would tape
you and give you a copy of the videotape. I think I might have also
had the option to select “Sci-fi” background or something like that.
The whole process took about five minutes and this was the result.
Some close friends refer to this as the highlight of my artistic
career, and sometimes I am inclined to agree with them.

production value, which totally does it for me.
The performers in that are Cian McConn & Stephanie Hough
who as Margaret and Jim have their own neat line in performance…

Oh this is smart & rich & lovely work!
You think perhaps the remix idea has colonised all of our thoughts
& our work to the level of clich�.
(So maybe all that remains is to classicize it – to do it better & better,
which is certainly something Silva, in various guises, has recently done..)
One day, someone describes
might, if of a cynical turn of mind, think – ‘Ho-Hum!’
Then you actually look at it & there’s something alchemic going on.
From a fairly base metaphor, Rick Silva conjures a work of elegance,
substance & great beauty – a beauty not only visual but moral.
Look at it! – it’s a paean to the planet but many other things too:
the scratching becomes dance, it’s a dance film!
The music is so carefully cut (but in such an apparently offhand way,
the way one imagines the mythical 19th century gentleman
would cut): it’s a music video!
It’s a travelogue (but its editing would not have made sense
before the net).
Each basic level constantly & fruitfully gives rise to other emergent
meanings which in turn reseed new ways of thinking about the piece
– the mark of a serious & substantial work of art.
PS Interesting to compare this with Cary Peppermint’s recent
Series of Practical Performances in the Wilderness
– another work that is in a sense engaged around loosely ecological
themes, very much the zeitgeist, (but reasonably so!)
& whose artistic qualities are not confined, limited, by that engagement…
PPS Now I think about it – there’s all the wonderful stuff by Stallbaum & Poole too.
That fits in somewhere too…
PPPS Personally I like this much more than Silva’s recap – for me, in that, there was a sense in which the formal structure based on a kind of repetition over a long period eventually closes
us off ( although one can of course see how that work might have been
a very necessary staging post to this)
– here there’s a fantastic sense of opening-out

Geoff Mcfetridge has had his hands in some amazing things including the title sequences for Adaptation and Virgin Suicides as well as music videos for The Avalanches, Simian, and (the first video posted) Whitest Boy Alive. I came across this video on my local skate shop’s blog and was interested to find out more about the creator and stumbled across the incredibly interesting series Western State put on by Coudal Partners. The second video posted “examines Geoff Mcfetridge, his work and his moustache.” I have put the videos in this order because this is the way I viewed them and I found it was fun to watch the artist’s work and then take the time to get to know more about him. Things seem to tie themselves together nicely that way.

‘John Cage made ‘Variations V’ in 1965 for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.
He and David Tudor settled on two systems for the sound to be affected by movement:
directional photocells aimed at the stage lights, so that the dancers triggered sounds as
they cut the light beams with their movements, and a series of antennae.
When a dancer came within four feet of an antenna a sound would result.
Cage, Tudor, and Gordon Mumma operate equipment to modify and determine

From the bastard progeny of Marcel Duchamp & the Marx Brothers,
the splendid & singular MTAA, comes Karaoke Death Match 100.
Here’s the thing:
Artist collaborative M.River & T.Whid face off in the most brutal performance art smack down of the new millennium.. Karaoke Deathmatch 100! This alcohol-fueled blood feud features 50 rounds of sing-along fury (taped live over an 8-hour period with hardly any pee breaks). No Carpenters hit too cheesy, no heavy metal lyric too trite for these teleprompter warriors to hurl in a battle to the end. Who will emerge victorious? Only YOU can decide.
It’s great stuff & clearly one to follow closely -we’ll be returning to them here ‘ere
close of play in 50 days. Just want to sneak in, though, that actually I found this
quite ahem..er.. moving: – the sheer effort invoked in the
act of singing; T.Whid’s strange shambling captive bear dance & M River’s weird
but somehow totally appropriate sudden & violent changes of dynamics.
A bit like Bas Jan Ader falling over, there’s something more here than originally
meets the eye & ear, & it’s a lot human & a bit wonderful.

Brian Gibson is a recently graduated video maker
with real & substantial talent.
In particular he is an excellent editor – with a
very musical eye (sic.).
This is the first of two posts featuring his work.
I’ve deliberately started with the one I think –
although it’s a good piece – is the weakest: Facade.
Nicely made, strong visual sense, marred only for me
by a slight surrender to sentimentality…
Then look at the remix, when he forgets
about expressing himself & starts to play
( & of course thereby expresses himself)
Now that’s good.
