iPhone Drum Circle (2009, 40 MB, 5:10 min)
On Sunday September 20 at 2pm, MTAA, Mike Koller and friends set out
a brightly colored blanket surround by a circle of chairs at McCarren Park,
Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They had amplified iPhones on which they have
downloaded touchscreen drum and bongo applications and they “jammed.”

Future and the Dream (2009, 298MB, 53:36 min)
A 53 minute piece from the indispensable Robert Croma,
which was made for the 24 hours 24 artists webcast earlier this year.
It’s Croma’s obsessive – lapidary – attention to detail
(as well as, of course, bucket loads of talent and flair) on quite small
canvasses that makes him unique so it’s interesting to see how
effectively he pulls this one off.
For comparison here’s a recent, haunting, miniature:
David Byrne – Report from L.A. (1986, 49MB, 4:30 min.)
Phillip Glass – Mad Rush (1986, 29MB, 3:17 min.)
Both of these pieces, although incredibly different in feel and nature, were
preformed for the “multidisciplinary event” which showcased “experimental
video, film, visual art, performance and music in a theatrical framework”.
Shot at New York City’s infamous Kitchen, and broadcast on television sets
across the states in 1986, the production “reflects a moment when art centers
were experimenting with new modes of presenting the arts for television.”

Hack.it.art was an exhibition and event about hacktivism in Italy.

Sentimental Construction (2007, 25.4MB, 6:31 min)
Nathaniel Stern took a bit of a hammering in various quarters for this piece,
made on a residency in Croatia.
I think there’s an probably an element of you-had-to-be-there about this
although, that said, I think the video is rather magical &
does as good a job of summoning the kind of ephemeral spell this stuff can weave
as any I’ve seen.
Lastly it has to be said the reason Nathaniel is great is because
(1) he has a frightening amount of energy, more indeed, really, than his fair share –
he starts 5 ‘isms’ before breakfast
(2) he is bold, unafraid to risk looking ridiculous & therefore quite often as an artist
he goes to much more interesting places than most…
In general I’ll take a Nathaniel “failure” over quite a lot of folks’ “success”.
