Brian Gibson – Parabolic

Parabolic
Parabolic (2007, 35.5MB, 4:50 min.)

This bit of intense gorgeousness was made from cell phone
video footage (funny how we still use that word, footage)
by Brian Gibson who sometimes posts here.
If it was simply lovely that would be enough, but it’s very
structured too – Brian has such a great feel for the intrinsic
qualities of the material but also a real editing eye…

Always truth in art from pouringdown.
If only we had more folks like this in the world.

Mimi, Jack & Anna (2007, 14.6MB, 2:09 min.)

‘About half way through this, I realised I was unconsciously structuring it with the work
of Jacques Rivette in mind. So it’s a kind of tiny tribute to a master.
The music is my arrangement for Tuba Quartet of the Pixies’
Is She Weird? played by Tubalat on their Hall of Mirrors CD.
Thanks to them & thanks to Anna, Jack & Mimi.’

from Michael Szpakowski.
a beauty !

Flightline ODC Slackers – Shannon Noble

Flightline ODC Slackers
Flightline ODC Slackers (2007, 23.5MB, 2:35 min)

An excellent piece from Shannon Noble.
Shannon is a maker of remarkably finely judged
videos which often amaze but never sit up and beg.
Here he tackles, with both grace & restraint, something
that I suppose could loosely be described as a genre
film: the sports documentary.
OK, the poetic sports documentary.

Jennifer Proctor – Pere Marquette

Pere Marquette
Pere Marquette (2007, 10.4MB, 1:59 min)

Well I’m a fool for anything to do with trains, but this gem
from Jennifer Proctor is outstanding; both
heart-rendingly beautiful & a lesson in craft:
it’s what she does & it’s what she doesn’t.

Beating Google

Rudy Adler piece on the excellent gaaagle.com,
protesting Google’s spineless policy of assisting
Chinese government censorship.
Check out this site, there’s some great stuff there.
Even better, make a short & relevant movie & send it in.
Now.

Heart::Break

Heart::Break (2007, 5.35MB, 35 secs)

So first to the Elephant In The Room. There’s just no tiptoeing
round the fact that Brittany Shoot is just a top name
for a videoblogger. OK – we’re all feeling better now. To the work.
Take a look: kind of understated, yet smart;
concise, neat, but poetry to it too.
Sometimes the very-short-video form leaves you
feeling slightly underwhelmed, cheated almost.
This is the opposite, a slowburn in the mind.
More before long.
